ISBN U.S. Agency and Its Functions

The U.S. ISBN Agency is responsible for the assignment of the ISBN Publisher Prefix to those publishers with a residence or office in the U.S. and are publishing their titles within the U.S.

It cannot assign ISBNs to foreign publishers (see ISBN Group Agencies for foreign local agency addresses).

The ISBN agency allocates and assigns publisher prefixes (which are unique to each publisher).

The Agency also supplies a list of Bookland EAN Bar Code Film Master Suppliers and hyphenation instructions and provides information on other related resources which publishers may require, including Cataloging in Publication program (CIP), Library of Congress Catalog Control Number (LCCN), International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), PUBNET, PUBEASY and the Book Industry Study Group (BISG).

The agency encourages and promotes the importance of the ISBN for proper bibliographic listing in Books in Print, Forthcoming Books and other directories.

The agency also maintains an up-to-date and comprehensive listing of all U.S. Publisher Prefix assignments for inclusion in the Publishers, Distributors & Wholesalers of the United States. This information is taken from R.R. Bowker's Publishers Authority Database.
